Aerospace industry has attained a role of primary importance both in Europe and worldwide as a driving force of economic growth and as a technologically intensive supply chain bringing about innovation in a great number of industrial sectors.

All the main industrialized countries now consider aerospace industry as a strategic sector in terms of added economic value, social relevance and contribution to the general well being and safety of its citizens.

As such, aerospace industry is in continuous search for talented and motivated young engineers to be employed in a European or international context and, for this to be feasible, requires constant and widespread access to an up-to-date knowledge base for the efficient training of its employees.

In this context, we view our Aerospace Engineering program here at Sapienza as a tightly knit community of students and professors that on one hand operates in close collaboration with industry personnel, research centers and institutions and on the other hand is setting the following standards for the educational system it is building:

Welcome to the Aerospace Engineering Curriculum page at Sapienza.

Our Curriculum is based on a three-year undergraduate program in Aerospace Engineering followed by an advanced two-year program in either Aeronautical or Space Engineering. Our graduate programs include one-year Masters courses in Civil Aviation Management, Orbiting Platforms and Satellites, Space Transportation Systems and a three-year Ph.D. course in Aerospace Technology.

The three-year program in Aerospace Engineering provides students with a strong fundamental background in mathematics, physics, chemistry, solid and fluid mechanics along with a broad technical knowledge in the fields of aeronautical and space engineering. The advanced two-year program in Aeronautical Engineering aims at providing students with a high-level scientific and professional training with specific engineering skills enabling the solution of complex problems in aircraft analysis and development both at the systems design and assembly levels.The parallel two-year program in Space Engineering focuses on providing students with extensive design methodologies in the fields of Space Launchers, Orbiting Platforms and Space Missions.

All the available Curricula share an interdisciplinary approach which reflects the essence of all the recent technological achievements in the Aerospace sector as well as the features of the Aerospace Industry, for which cross-curricular skills are increasingly considered an added value.

Our Curricula offer a broad spectrum of international activities both within the ERASMUS mobility system and PEGASUS network with a growing number of programs held abroad in the most prestigious European schools and colleges of Aerospace Engineering.

In addition, our advanced Aeronautical and Space Engineering two-year programs are part of a French-Italian network for the attainment of a jointly-recognized engineering title at selected Universities and 'Grand Ecoles' in Paris, Grenoble, Toulouse, Nantes and Nice.

Our students take part in such activities as the Design, Build and Flight (DFB) Competition, held annually in the United States among teams of the world's leading Aeronautical schools, a competition in which Sapienza has repeatedly obtained prestigious results.

Similarly, within the Space Engineering program, students have taken part in the European Student Moon Orbiter (ESMO) project promoted by the European Space Agency.

The main career opportunities for students completing the Aerospace Engineering program are in aeronautical and aerospace industries, airline companies, national and international research institutions, space agencies and universities. Owing to the great generality and wide spectrum of the curricula, further opportunities may however be sought in similar engineering fields. Moreover, although the workplace can be located regionally or nationally, an ever growing number of opportunities can be sought at a European or international level.

Further information on the Curricula, on how to apply to the different programs or on the many opportunities available for students can be found throughout this site. Also available on this site is exhaustive information on the personal research fields of individual teachers and professors. Students can select a topic of interest among such research fields for their final or masters thesis or their doctoral dissertation thus creating the opportunity to take part in state of the art international research programs that have obtained worldwide recognition. Among such programs are the contributions to the structural and propulsion system design of the European launcher VEGA, the participation in the Mars-Express mission, which established the presence of water on Mars, and in the Cassini-Huygens mission during which an underground ocean was discovered on Titan.

  • To offer programs suited for talented students with a strong motivation and interest in aerospace engineering and who share the ambition to reach positions of responsibility and leadership roles in industry, academia and institutions.

  • To favor a collaborative and cross-curricular approach so as to encourage students' creativity within a solid fundamental knowledge base.
